11 September 2009 Daddy Giljoteen Call It a Day Finnish band Daddy Giljoteen has disbanded. During its seven-year career, two albums and four singles were released. "We will continue in music, albeit with reconfigurations and new lineups", the members of the band say.
Two musicians from mideastern Finland, Jari Rattya (a.k.a. Taylor) and Pekka Kaipainen (a.k.a. PdJ), were the core of the band throughout their lifespan. Jykke Pirinen (a.k.a. Jorge) was the inaugural drummer, only to be replaced by Jan Pethman later on. The real thrill of Daddy Giljoteen's music was its utmost versatility; the band could mix influences from blues, rock, jazz, surf and rockabilly.
Daddy Giljoteen coined a term to describe their stuff: Action Blues.
In history, the band will be best remembered by their albums "Once They Called Me a Prodigy" (2007) and "Holy Mail Express" (2008). Both are significant chapters in Finnish music history.
"The band would especially like to thank Blues-Finland.com for support and understanding. It is very important that there are channels for consumers of alternative and original music", the band say.
Seven Years of Action Blues
Daddy Giljoteen was formed in 2002 by Jari Rattya, a music and theater talent from the city of Kajaani, and a musician, Pekka Kaipainen, from the same area. "The early days of the band is best characterized by energy and enthusiasm -- rather than by skill and consideration", Rattya remembers.
Kaipainen reminisces: "However, we hit the stage as soon as we had a set of songs. We like jumped to the bottom of the river, head first!"
Rattya was the guitarist, singer and songwriter of the band, whereas Kaipainen worked as the bassist and arranger.
DG gradually attracted more attention in Finland. At last, first album "Once They Called Me a Prodigy" was released in early 2007. The band were able to make a name for themselves abroad, too, thanks to the release of the album in Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Austria.
Foreign distribution paid dividends: the band did a tour in Germany in the spring of 2008. "Some people in the audience knew the songs from 'Prodigy'. The crowd was relatively young, and there were some slightly older blues fans as well. At best, everybody just went crazy", says Rattya.
A more rootsy album "Holy Mail Express" saw the daylight in late 2008. "There are more such songs on that album that could traditionally be described as blues", Kaipainen states. Both core members are blues fans. Rattya's favorites include James Cotton, Elmore James, and Buddy Guy. Kaipainen is, among others, into Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Johnny Winter, in addition to whom he mentions the Black Keys as strong modernists.
Daddy Giljoteen announced the disbanding of the group in September 2009. .
